Honorable Discharge An honorable discharge is the most common type of military discharge. This discharge shows that a military member did not leave the service under dishonorable conditions, like bad conduct or committing a crime.

'Discharge' means an HM Forces member who has permanently left HM Forces. All those who have been discharged will hold a certificate of discharge. Those about to be discharged will hold a letter from their commanding officer confirming their date and reasons for discharge.

Dishonorable Discharge The worst form of discharge a service member can receive is a dishonorable discharge. It is often given along with a stint in military prison.

Honorable discharge If the service member being recommended for administrative separation has met the standards of acceptable conduct and performance in their duties as military personnel, then they may still receive an honorable characterization of their service, even in the event of involuntary separation.

It is considered roughly the equivalent of a Bad Conduct Discharge, which is the usual result when an AWOL is tried by court-martial. In both instances, the Undesirable Discharge is given for an absence offens~ and the violation of military criminal law, although the punishment is administrative rather than judicial.
