Veterans' Preference is an assistance program for military benefits who seek employment with the state. Preference can be applied to a veteran's eligibility for qualifying open and open, non-promotional examinations.

Under VEVRAA, a veteran may be classified as a ''disabled veteran,'' ''recently separated veteran,'' ''active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran,'' or ''Armed Forces service medal veteran. '' active duty* in the U.S. Military?

There are three types of veterans' preferences: Disabled (10-point preference eligible) Non-disabled (5-point preference eligible) Sole survivorship (0-point preference eligible)

T -- Tough. I always find a sense of toughness in all veterans no matter what conflict, service, or time they served.

Veterans who are disabled, who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during certain specified time periods or in military campaigns are entitled to preference over others in hiring for virtually all federal government jobs.

When claiming Veterans' Preference, you must provide a copy of your DD-214, certificate of release or discharge from active duty or other acceptable documentation....Claiming Veterans' Preference Dates of service. Discharge status. Disability rating.

You may obtain a letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs reflecting your level of disability for preference eligibility by visiting a VA Regional Office, contacting a VA call center or online. Prior to appointment, an agency will require the service member to provide a copy of the DD-214.

Veterans must have been honorably discharged as indicated on their DD214 to be eligible for preference. Eligible applicants who meet the requirements for the position are guaranteed preference at every step through-out the hiring process.
