Generally speaking, enlistees do not stay for this long and do not make the Coast Guard a career for themselves, since in most cases, enlistees commit to 8 years of service. Depending on the terms of the contract, 2 to 6 years are spent on active duty and the rest spent in the Coast Guard Reserves.

Generally your enlistment runs for 8 years in some combination of active duty (full time), reserve (weekend drill) and ready reserve (on call) obligations. Currently the CG offers 2, 3, and 4 year active duty contracts. OCS grads enlist at the beginning and then get a 3 year active duty obligation on graduation.

The Coast Guard patrols America's coasts and international waters using cutters, aircraft, and intelligence to detect, intercept, and disrupt dangerous and illegal activities such as drug smuggling and human trafficking.

For all SOCSS requests, the SPO/PSI must contact PPC Customer Service via an online trouble ticket or send an email to PPC-DG-customercare@uscg.mil and provide the following information (see Required Documents and Formatting Required Documents): • Member's Employee ID and full name • Responsible SPO/PSI's Department ID ...

The U.S. Army has expanded its two-year enlistment options, making it easier for individuals who may not be comfortable making a four- or six-year commitment. Under this option, after basic and advanced training, new Soldiers would only be required to spend two years on active duty.

Most Coast Guard members are stationed in cities or small communities along the Atlantic, Pacific, Great Lakes, or Gulf coasts. Overseas opportunities are usually filled by volunteers. Assignments normally last between two and four years.

To qualify for retirement, a member must serve for at least 20 years (exceptions may be made in disability cases). Retirement pay depends on the length of active duty service, pay grade and the retirement plan that is in place at the time a member enters the service.
