File an amended return using Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return as soon as possible. Include any forms and/or schedules that you're changing and/or didn't include with the original return.

On Form 1040-X, enter your income, deductions, and credits from your return as originally filed or as previously adjusted by either you or the IRS, the changes you are making, and the corrected amounts. Then, figure the tax on the corrected amount of taxable income and the amount you owe or your refund.

Note: Beginning in 2020 you can file a 1040-X electronically but only for tax year 2019 and later and only if you electronically filed the original return. For earlier tax years an amended returns has to be filed on paper.

Online tax software may charge an additional fee or you may need to upgrade your subscription. If you want to amend for free, you may need to file a paper amendment. You can generally complete the forms online (the IRS offers fillable PDF forms) and print them for signing and mailing.

Can I file an amended Form 1040-X electronically? You can file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return electronically with tax filing software to amend your Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, or 1040-SS/PR for the current or two prior tax periods.

If you choose to mail Form 1040-X, print the amended return and mail it to the IRS. Attach any required accompanying documents, such as forms created in the return due to the changes made, or any documentation that would support the changes made (corrected Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement).
