Most encyclopedias and physics books credit the great British astronomer Sir William Herschel with the discovery of infrared radiation in 1800.

Around 1800, the German-born British-astronomer William Herschel discovered infrared radiation. He did so with a simple experiment in which he dispersed sunlight through a prism and placed a thermometer at the location of each colour.

In 1801, Johann Ritter conducted an experiment to investigate the existence of energy beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum. Knowing that photographic paper would turn black more rapidly in blue light than in red light, he exposed the paper to light beyond violet.

Herschel's experiment was important because it marked the first time that someone demonstrated that there were types of light that we cannot see with our eyes. Recent developments in detector technology have led to many useful applications using infrared radiation.

Herschel used three thermometers with blackened bulbs (to better absorb heat) and, for each color of the spectrum, placed one bulb in a visible color while the other two were placed beyond the spectrum as control samples.

From this experiment, is there any evidence of radiation falling to the left of the violet end of the visible spectrum? Explain. In fact, radiation does exist beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum. Ultraviolet radiation was discovered in 1801 by Johann Wilhelm Ritter.

DISCOVERY OF INFRARED In 1800, William Herschel conducted an experiment measuring the difference in temperature between the colors in the visible spectrum. He placed thermometers within each color of the visible spectrum. The results showed an increase in temperature from blue to red.

Herschel's experiment is important because it was the first time someone demonstrated that there are types of light we cannot see with our eyes. As we now know, there are many other types of radiation that we cannot see, and the visible colors are only a small part of the entire range of the electromagnetic spectrum.
