At the very center of Sunday Mass, we recite either the Nicene or the Apostles' Creed. Both Creeds sum up the core tenets of the Catholic faith in short statements; they are authoritative summaries of what God has revealed and has done.

It begins with the statement: 'We believe …' The Nicene Creed uses the same threefold structure as the Apostles' Creed but goes into more depth and detail. It was first adopted at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325 by a gathering of bishops.

Both Creeds essentially say the same thing, with one being more precise (Nicene) and the other summarizing the faith in fewer words (Apostles'). The purpose of each one is the same, affirming the faith and proclaiming before all what we believe. Read more: What does the word “Amen” mean?

Nicene Creed, also called Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, a Christian statement of faith that is the only ecumenical creed because it is accepted as authoritative by the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and major Protestant churches.

The Apostles' Creed is probably older than the Nicene Creed, since it is based on the baptismal profession of the early Roman Church. Both creeds, however, have the same ancient origin.

What does the Nicene Creed show? There is one God who exists in three persons. God the Father is the creator of all things. Jesus, as God the Son, suffered and died as a fully human being to save other humans from sin. Jesus rose from the dead and is seated in Heaven as the Son of God.
