A well-functioning vascular access (VA) is a mainstay to perform an efficient hemodialysis (HD) procedure. There are three main types of access: native arteriovenous fistula (AVF), arteriovenous graft, and central venous catheter (CVC). AVF, described by Brescia and Cimino, remains the first choice for chronic HD.

What problems could a vascular access cause? All three types of vascular access AV fistula, AV graft, and venous catheter can cause problems that require further treatment or surgery. The most common problems include access infection and low blood flow due to blood clotting in the access.

Always wash your hands with soap and warm water before and after touching your access. Clean the area around the access with antibacterial soap or rubbing alcohol before your dialysis treatments. Check the pulse (also called thrill) in your access every day.

Assess for patency at least every 8 hours. Palpate the vascular access to feel for a thrill or vibration that indicates arterial and venous blood flow and patency. Auscultate the vascular access with a stethoscope to detect a bruit or "swishing" sound that indicates patency.

Vascular Access Device (VAD): Any device utilized for venous access regardless of location. These include peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV), peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), centrally inserted central catheter (CICC), and implanted venous port.

Types of Vein Access in Dialysis There are three types of vein access used in dialysis: arteriovenous (AV) fistula, arteriovenous graft and central venous catheter.

Vascular and access are medical words that mean a way to get to your blood . Vascular= blood and access= a way to get there. For you to be able to receive. hemodialysis, blood needs to be able to leave your body, travel to the artificial kidney. (dialyzer) and return to your body.

A fistula, an access made by joining an artery and vein in your arm. A graft, an access made by using a piece of soft tube to join an artery and vein in your arm. A catheter, a soft tube that is placed in a large vein, usually in your neck.

It is put in a large vein, usually in your neck but sometimes in your upper chest. Catheters have more problems (like clotting and infections) than fistulas or grafts. They may not have enough blood flow for good dialysis treatment.

After dialysis, assess the vascular access for any bleeding or hemorrhage. When you move the patient or help with ambulation, avoid trauma to or excessive pressure on the affected arm. Assess for blebs (ballooning or bulging) of the vascular access that may indicate an aneurysm that can rupture and cause hemorrhage.
