The full University logo utilizes two typefaces. Perpetua is used for the Penn mark and ITC Stone Serif is used in University of Pennsylvania logotype.

The University motto is the Latin phrase Leges sine Moribus vanae, which translates into English as “Laws without morals are useless.” The selection of this motto is attributed to the first Provost, William Smith.

It features three major symbolic elements: the open books, to signify learning; the dolphin, taken from the center of Benjamin Franklin's coat of arms; and the three "plates" (circles on the chevron), taken from the center of the Penn family's coat of arms.

The Motto. The University motto is the Latin phrase Leges sine Moribus vanae, which translates into English as “Laws without morals are useless.” The selection of this motto is attributed to the first Provost, William Smith.

The Penn coat-of-arms was derived by combining the coat-of-arms of Benjamin Franklin and that of William Penn's family. The dolphin on the red chief was part of Franklin's coat-of-arms and the three silver plates on the blue chevron were part of Penn's.

In 1755 it was chartered as the College and Academy of Philadelphia. With the foundation in 1765 of the first medical school in colonial America, the institution became in fact a university, but it was not so called until 1779, when for a time it received state support.
