A motor vehicle purchased in Texas for use exclusively outside Texas is exempt from motor vehicle sales tax. To claim the exemption, a purchaser must not use the motor vehicle in Texas, except for transportation directly out of state, and must not register the motor vehicle in Texas.

When a military member with Texas as their home state of record purchases a motor vehicle in Texas, the 6.25 percent motor vehicle sales tax is due. When sold by a dealer in Texas, the motor vehicle sales tax is calculated on the retail sales price, less trade-in allowance.

A licensed motor vehicle dealer will normally only be charging the sales tax rate of 6.25 percent. A dealer is not required to collect tax on the sale of a motor vehicle with a gross weight in excess of 11,000 pounds.

Report and pay the unit property tax payment. Multiply the sales price of the vehicle by the unit property tax factor. Example: $20,000 × $0.0020417 = $40.83 in tax prepayment. Apply unit property tax factor to each vehicle sold in a month and report to the county tax office, along with the tax prepayment.

The VIT is a property tax assessed on the dealer, not the purchaser, and is a negotiable item on the sales agreement.

"It's huge," says Zavary, "It's close to 3.6 to 3.7%. So, if you have a million dollars worth of inventory, at the end of the year, you have to pay that 3.6 to 3.7%." For those who need a little help with the math, that million dollars worth of inventory means a $36,000 to $37,000 tax bill every single year.

Inventory tax is an additional property tax against the value of your business's inventory. It's often included with such taxes as furniture and equipment. Most states do not tax inventories, though some do.

For local property tax purposes, Texas law requires a motor vehicle dealer's inventory to be appraised based on the total sales of motor vehicles in the prior year. A dealer must file an annual declaration of total sales from the prior year with their county appraisal district.
