Prepared infant formula can spoil if it is left out at room temperature. Use prepared infant formula within 2 hours of preparation and within one hour from when feeding begins. If you do not start to use the prepared infant formula within 2 hours, immediately store the bottle in the fridge and use it within 24 hours.

If you're breastfeeding but want to introduce formula feeds, it's best to gradually reduce the amount of breastfeeds. This will help your baby get used to the change and stop your breasts becoming sore from being too full of milk and leaking.

To start transitioning to formula, replace breastfeeding with a bottle. Try choosing a feeding time your baby is the least interested in, or one that's inconvenient for you. As your baby adjusts to the change, gradually drop additional breastfeedings one at a time, until you've hit the schedule you're looking for.

When you're ready to introduce formula, offer a bottle of formula an hour or two after breastfeeding and then introduce an additional daily bottle-feeding session a few days later.

If you want to do this, it's best to wait until your milk supply is fully established. This can take around 6 to 8 weeks. You can start by replacing 1 of your baby's regular daily breastfeeds with a bottle (or, if your baby is over 6 months, a cup or beaker) of formula, instead.

Start small. (Again, try to wait till your baby is about 6 weeks old.) If after a week of one-bottle-a-day is working, you can try add a second two-ounce bottle to your day while you continue to breastfeed. And when starting out, always offer breastmilk before the bottle.

If you need to feed your baby away from home, take with you: a measured amount of formula powder in a small, clean and dry container. a vacuum flask of hot water that's just been boiled. an empty sterilised feeding bottle with cap and retaining ring in place.

Ready-to-use liquid formula doesn't require any preparation. Just be sure to store unopened bottles and cans at room temperature, and refrigerate any opened bottles and cans. Enfamil formulas in powder and concentrated liquid form need to be diluted with water before being fed to your baby.
