It is an elution separation method that enables to separate analytes in relatively short times and collect fractions for further characterization or for investigation of their properties. Other advantages of FFF are small consumption of samples and gentle experimental conditions.

#FFF is WHITE. #666 is a DARK GRAY. #AAA is a light LIGHT GRAY.

Field-flow fractionation, abbreviated FFF, is a separation technique invented by Prof. J. Calvin Giddings. The technique is based on separation of colloidal or high molecular weight substances in liquid solutions, flowing through the separation platform, which does not have a stationary phase.

Field flow fractionation (FFF) is a chromatography-like separation technique which is designed for fractionation of macromolecules, colloids and particles. The principle is simple. A laminar flow of carrier liquid between two walls, separated by c. 0.1 mm, creates a parabolic velocity profile.

AF4 is distinct from symmetrical Flow FFF because it contains only one permeable wall so the cross-flow is caused only by the carrier liquid. The cross-flow is induced by the carrier liquid constantly exiting by way of the semi-permeable wall on the bottom of the channel.

Clearly offering a much larger range than size-exclusion chromatography, FFF does share some similarities with SEC—both fractionate ing to diffusion coefficient—but FFF uses no stationary phase. The analytes do not experience shear or high pressure.
