In Maine, certain items may be exempt from the sales tax to all consumers, not just tax-exempt purchasers. Resale Certificates expire on December 31st. A Resale Certificate issued before October 1st is valid for the remainder of that calendar year and the following three calendar years. A Resale Certicate issued after October 1st is valid for the remainder of that calendar year and the following four calendar years.

Homestead Exemption -This program provides a measure of property tax relief for certain individuals that have owned homestead property in Maine for at least 12 months and make the property they occupy on April 1 their permanent residence. Property owners would receive an exemption of $25,000.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A RETAILER AS A "SELLER" Customers who claim that their purchase is for resale must document that claim with a valid Resale Certificate issued by MRS. The Resale Certificate must be properly completed and signed by the customer certifying that they will resell the merchandise being purchased.

REGISTER AN ACCOUNT You may also contact MRS at (207) 624-9693 or email sales.tax@maine.gov to obtain your tax registration number. You will be asked to provide your FEIN or SSN and other details about your business. Enter these numbers carefully in the blocks provided. First time users must create a password.

To qualify for a resale certificate, a retailer must apply for or have an active account and report $3,000 or more of gross sales per year. Maine Revenue Services annually reviews all active sales tax accounts and reissues expiring resale certificates to those retailers that qualify.
