This means that once you have spent the available funds, there will be nothing to cover the items outstanding. Your debit card/ATM transactions will be declined if adequate funds are not available.

FOR CONSUMER ACCOUNTS ONLY: We apply a grace amount of $10 to the available balance in order to prevent an overdraft fee from being assessed on items that would have overdrawn your account by $10 or less.

There are also some drawbacks to overdraft protection: You'll have to pay whatever fee your bank charges. Some banks assess a fee per overdraft protection transfer, which can result in multiple fees in a single day. Transactions may be declined if you don't have sufficient funds in your linked savings account.

Your bank or credit union cannot charge you fees for overdrafts on ATM and most debit card transactions unless you have agreed (“opted in”) to these fees.

NBT Bank has Standard Overdraft Practices that come with each account. We cover overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction.

Opt out of overdraft coverage Opting out means that your provider cannot cover one-time debit card or ATM transactions or charge overdraft fees for them. It can cover checks and recurring debit transactions without asking for your permission.

Most consumer advocates recommend against getting overdraft protection for ATM and debit card transactions. If you want to get overdraft protection for debit card and ATM card transactions, you must opt into your bank's coverage.

If you choose to opt in to debit card and ATM overdraft, you are usually allowed to make ATM withdrawals and debit card purchases even if you do not have enough funds at the time of the transaction. However, you will generally incur fees on transactions that settle against a negative balance later.
