A confined space is one which is both enclosed, or largely enclosed, and which also has a reasonably foreseeable risk to workers of fire, explosion, loss of consciousness, asphyxiation or drowning.

Confined spaces include, but are not limited to, tanks, vessels, silos, storage bins, hoppers, vaults, pits, manholes, tunnels, equipment housings, ductwork, pipelines, etc.

OSHA has a three part definition: The space must be “large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily enter and performed assigned work” AND. The space must “have limited or restricted means for entry or exit” AND. The space must not be “designed for continuous employee occupancy”.
