We owe the phrase 'the rise of the novel' to the critic Ian Watt, who used it as the title of a hugely influential book, first published in 1957. The crucial event was the publication of Samuel Richardson's Pamela in 1740.

In the 18th century, drama lost the fame that it had in the Elizabethan Age. It did not remain an influential literary form. Hence some others had to take its place and its place was filled by the English novel after 1740 A.D. Thus the decline of drama led to the rise of the English novel.

The 18th-century literature was characterized by the spirit of realism and romantic features like enthusiasm, passion, imaginations, etc. declined in this period. Reason, intellect, correctness, satirical spirit, etc. were the main characteristics of 18th-century literature.

The 18th century saw the development of the modern novel as literary genre, in fact many candidates for the first novel in English date from this period, of which Daniel Defoe's 1719 Robinson Crusoe is probably the best known.

The Rise of the Novel is Ian Watt's classic description of the interworkings of social conditions, changing attitudes, and literary practices during the period when the novel emerged as the dominant literary form of the individualist era.

The rise of the English novel occurred primarily in the 18th century; this does not mean that there was no form of novels before this time. It only means that there was an increased release of novels and novelists during this period. The 18th century was a period that lasted from 1685 – 1815.
