Alarm site locations within the City of Houston city limits and areas receiving Houston Police response are required to have a valid alarm permit.

Excessive False Alarms If the alarm site does not have an alarm permit (through non-registration or through having been revoked), the alarm system user will be subject to a fine of between $300 and $500, for each separate occurrence.

A security alarm permit is required if you have a security alarm that is audible and/or monitored to provide police response. The annual permit fee is $50 for a residence and $100 for a business permit. ​A permitted alarm site is allowed three free false burglar alarms in a twelve-month period.

The City of Austin requires an alarm permit for each residence or business that operates an alarm system in the Austin Police Department jurisdiction. The Alarm Permit Ordinance is administered by the City of Austin Development Services Department.

Property owners that a monitored alarm system and wish to have a police response to an alarm activation must have an alarm permit issued by the Development Services Department.

A non-refundable $30.00 registration fee must be paid with each initial registration. A separate registration must be obtained for each alarm user and/or location. Registrations must be renewed on a biennial (2 year) basis at a cost of $10.00.
