A supplier is a person, business, or entity that provides products or services to another entity. For example, a company that sells PCBAs to a laptop manufacturer or OEM is one example of a supplier.

The supplier looks for signs of controlled growth, good financial management and sound business practices. These can be found in your financial statements, your bank statements, trade references, credit checks and professional references.

Following your risk profile, you will know which supplier or suppliers bring the highest risk to your business, and are of the highest cost. Once you have determined who these are, you will know how much time, you, or your team will need to dedicate to monitoring that supplier and their outputs.

A buyer organization can have a list of suppliers referred to as the Supplier Profile list. It displays basic supplier information such as name, status, parent profile name, categories to which the supplier is associated with of all the suppliers at one glance.

I prefer to categorize the vendors into four categories: Strategic, Major, Niche and Tactical. Each category receives different focus from the Vendor Management Office. This categorization has helped me to manage a large ecosystem of vendors quite effectively.
