Minnesota Taxes on Military Retired Pay: Minnesota does not tax military retired pay. To be eligible the Service member's retired pay must have been included in their federal adjusted gross income.

Finally, some states don't tax any income, including military benefits: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Federal law prohibits states from taxing active service military pay earned by nonresidents. Thus, a nonresident member of the military often does not need to file a Minnesota tax return. Minnesota also allows for the subtraction of military pay earned by a Minnesota resident for full-time active military service.
