Study scores between 30 and 40 are above average and study scores above 40 are exceptional. Similarly, study scores between 20 and 30 are below average. Very few study scores below 20 are awarded. The median study score has been chosen as the best indicator of the typical level of achievement in a school.

What is a VCE Study Score? Your “raw” study score is a ranking of how well you performed in a certain subject. The scale goes from 0-50, with a mean of 30. Students with a raw study score of 30 will sit on the centre of the bell curve — this is where the majority of Year 12 students will sit on a subject.

Each year, and for every study, the mean (average) study score is set at 30 with a standard deviation of 7. This means that a score between 23 and 37 shows that you are in the middle range of students (approximately 68% of the population); a score of 38 or more indicates that you are in the top 16%.

The median score is 30, which means if you have a raw study score of 30 then you have performed better than half of all students. If you have a study score of 40, then you've performed better than about 91% of all students who took the same subject.

Re: how to get a study score of 40 or above? Yeah, generally to get into the 40's you need to either have consistent A+'s, or at the very least, a high A and two mid-high A+'s.

A score of between 23 and 37 shows that you are in the middle range of students; a score of 38 or more indicates that you are in the top 15%. For studies with large enrolments (1000 or more): 2% of students will get a score on or above 45. 9% of students will get a score on or above 40.

A study score of 30 is average, 40 is top 9% and 45 is the top 2%. A study score of 35 indicates you are in the top 26% of the state, so if you think about it, it's a pretty amazing score! A 35 is not like getting a 70% and a 40 is certainly not like getting 80%.
