Can I use the Hazlewood Act for online classes? Conditionally, yes. The Hazlewood Act covers online classes if they receive formula funding, are taken through Texas public institutions, and the charges are paid to the institution (and not a third party).

In order to be eligible to receive a Hazlewood Act Exemption, a veteran must prove that he or she was a Texas resident at the time of entry into military service, entered the service in the State of Texas, or declared Texas as his or her home of record in the manner provided by the military or other service.

How long does it take to get approved for Hazlewood? Once all required documents are received, it typically takes 48 hours for review by the School Certifying Official (SCO). The SCO will notify the Cashier's office or Business Services to apply the exemption to your account.

The Hazlewood Act is a State of Texas benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption at public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does NOT include living expenses, books, or supply fees.

The Texas Hazlewood Exemption allows eligible Veterans or a designee to transfer all unused hours of the exemption, up to 150 semester credit hours, to a child who is 25 years old or younger on the first day of the term.

A student may use Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 GI Bill) or Chapter 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation) with Hazlewood during the same term if the combination of benefits does not exceed the total amount of tuition and fees. In either case, Hazlewood benefits may cover eligible tuition and fees that are not covered by Ch.
