The maximum credit allowed is $1,168. Household income includes all taxable and certain nontaxable income, less a deduction of $500 for each qualifying dependent. If household income is $24,680 or more, no credit is available. Property taxes are those levied for 2022, regardless of when they are paid.

General claimants who do not qualify for special consideration receive a homestead property tax credit equal to 60% of the amount their property taxes exceed 3.5% of their income, up to $1,200. This credit may be claimed regardless of whether or not a Michigan income tax return (form MI-1040) must be filed.

Michigan's homestead property tax credit program is a way the state of Michigan helps offset a portion of the property taxes paid by Michigan homeowners and renters. Homeowners pay property taxes directly and renters pay them indirectly with their rent.
