Not every TIG welding application has the same optimal gas flow rate. While gas flow rates for TIG welding are typically between 10 cfh and 35 cfh, the rate is impacted by the consumables being used and atmospheric conditions. First, be aware of how the shielding gas interacts with atmospheric gases.

Using the wrong size tungsten, whether in AC or DC applications, is one of the more common causes of an unstable arc. If the tungsten is too large for the amperage, the arc may rotate around the end of the tungsten.

TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR TIG WELDER Wrong gas flow, balance control incorrect, electrode preparation or worn, improper gas flow. No shielding gas, open weld circuit. Insufficient gas flow, wrong electrode polarity, too much torch heat, current doesn't match tungsten size.

Tungsten electrode contamination is another common pitfall that can occur during TIG welding. Indications that tungsten electrode contamination has occurred are: one, the weld puddle appears dirty; two, the filler rod does not join or melt smoothly into the weld puddle; and three, the arc becomes erratic.

The four most common dangers of TIG welding metals like stainless steel are: UV light from the welding arc can damage eyes and skin. Toxic fumes from molten metals. Electric shocks from unsafe tools, water, working conditions. Leaking shield gases can displace oxygen.

Arc length, which is the distance between the electrode and the base metal, determines TIG welding voltage. Holding too long of an arc increases overall heat input and the potential for distortion. It also widens the weld bead while decreasing penetration, and affects weld bead appearance.

What are the limitations of TIG Welding? Travel speeds and deposition rates are relatively low, increasing weld cost. A high degree of operator skill is required to produce quality welds. Process is not easily automated.

The positive current (DCEP) is what concentrates too much heat on the tungsten electrode and causes it to ball up or even melt away.
