Recommended Exercises After Knee Replacement Surgery One of the most highly recommended exercises is walking. Walking regularly throughout the day will help you regain your independence. Once you're discharged, try walking around your home using crutches, a walker or a cane as prescribed by your doctor of therapist.

Early treatment of the stiff TKA includes physical therapy and manipulation under anesthesia (MUA). MUA performed within 3 months may have the greatest increase in ROM but notable improvement can occur up to 6 months after TKA. After six months, arthroscopic or open surgery is recommended for persistent stiffness.

Baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, gymnastics, jogging, rock climbing, hang gliding, parachuting and high-impact aerobics are activities that should be avoided. We are now much more liberal with what we allow [patients] to do.

Activity. It is important to gradually increase your out-of-home activity during the first few weeks after surgery. If you do too much activity, your knee may become more swollen and painful.

In most cases, you can resume many of your normal activities after about 12 weeks. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting a new sport or physical activity. Together, you can make a plan for suitable exercises. Experts recommend staying active if you have osteoarthritis of the knee.
