They are known for the alliance, or confederation, called the League of the Haudenosaunee, the People of the Longhouse. They were also known as the Five Nations Confederacy.

Indigenous people (Native Americans) are still here, and many are citizens of the following nine state recognized nations: Cayuga Nation. Oneida Indian Nation. Onondaga Nation. Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe. Seneca Nation of Indians. Allegany Reservation. ... Shinnecock Indian Nation. Tonawanda Seneca Nation. Tuscarora Nation.

Prior to Europeans arriving in New York, the land was inhabited by Native Americans. There were two major groups of Native Americans: the Iroquois and the Algonquian peoples. The Iroquois formed an alliance of tribes called the Five Nations which included the Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Onondaga, and the Seneca.

There are eight federally recognized Indian tribes in New York State.
