Shortly after Justinian became emperor in 527, he decided the empire's legal system needed repair. Early in his reign, Justinian appointed an official, Tribonian, to oversee this task. The project as a whole became known as Corpus juris civilis, or the Justinian Code.

It was important for the empires to have detailed legal codes so everything was fair and people could not get around the law. The legal codes also kept order and limited crime.

What is the significance of the Code of Justinian? Although the Code of Justinian was not, in itself, a new legal code, it rationalized hundreds of years of existing Roman statutes. Contradictions and conflicts were eliminated, and any existing laws that were not included in it were repealed.

The Codex Justinianus, or Code of Justinian, was a legal code. It consisted of the various sets of laws and legal interpretations collected and codified by scholars under the direction of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.

- Justinian's Code was the basis of a style of law called civil law. - Civil law is a system of binding, written laws that cover just about everything. - Judges must make decisions based (almost) solely on those written laws. - Judges dominate, while lawyers play a smaller role of merely presenting the case.

The Corpus Juris Civilis has four parts: the Code, which consists of 4,652 laws; the Digest, a 50-‐ volume collection of decisions made by respected judges; the Institutes, a kind of textbook of legal procedures, and the Novels, which contain laws introduced by Justinian and his immediate successors.

The Codex Justinianus, or Code of Justinian, was a legal code. It consisted of the various sets of laws and legal interpretations collected and codified by scholars under the direction of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.

To oversee his new empire, Justinian ordered legal experts to consolidate old Roman laws into a single law code. The Justinian Code served as the legal basis for criminal justice, marriage, property, slavery, & women's rights.
