Now we hear a story about Boo, courtesy of Jem, courtesy of Miss Stephanie Crawford, the neighborhood busybody: When Boo was 33 years old, he was cutting out newspaper articles for his scrapbook when he suddenly stabbed the scissors into his father's leg, then calmly went back to what he was doing.

Charles Baker "Dill" Harris: The Finch children meet Dill for the first time in Chapter 1. He is from Mississippi and is staying with his Aunt Rachel for the summer. Dill is seven years old but looks years younger.

Chapter 1 provides the novel's exposition. The exposition is the part of the plot that introduces the characters and their situations. Scout tells her family history, the neighborhood history, and sets up situation of trying to get Boo Radley to come out of the house.

A successful lawyer, Atticus makes a solid living in Maycomb, a tired, poor, old town in the grips of the Great Depression. He lives with Jem and Scout on Maycomb's main residential street. Their cook, an old black woman named Calpurnia, helps to raise the children and keep the house.

“Jem gave a reasonable description of Boo: Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that's why his hands were blood-stained—if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off.

The other boys got sent off to reform school but Boo's father kept him at home as his form of punishment. ing to town gossip, Boo drove a pair of scissors into his father's leg one day. He was locked up in the Town Hall basement until the Radleys brought him home and he was never seen again.

Harper Lee gives us a clue about Boo Radley's age when we find out that he was 33 when he stabbed his parents. As Scout is the narrator, and we know she is aged 6–8 during the course of the novel and can't recall the incident—it probably happened at least 5 years before the events of the novel.

Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square.
