Visual inspection is a critical step to confirm the effectiveness of cleaning process equipment after cleaning. The acceptance criteria for visual inspection is visually clean. The visual inspection should include direct and indirect product contact surfaces, and requires the equipment surfaces to be visible.

Because cleaning that mitigates food safety risks is considered a preventive control, these validated cleaning processes need verification. Therefore, a formal annual verification of validated cleaning processes should be conducted and documented to ensure the preventive control is still working as designed.

Once the visual inspection is complete, one of two activities must be conducted in order for the area to be cleared for use; the first option is that a Certified Renovator must perform a cleaning verification. The second, another certified professional must conduct a clearance examination.

The one key difference is that each cleaning verification trial or process needs to be sampled and tested to ensure it meets the acceptance criteria. Cleaning verification also allows the cleaning process to be altered each time in order for it to be optimized based on the visual and test results.

Cleaning verification cards – EPA provides cleaning verification cards (used to compare to disposable cleaning cloths to ensure an area has been adequately cleaned) at the request of the training program manager to accredited training providers for distribution to renovator students.

Cleaning verification may only be performed by an EPA Certified Renovator if renovations covered by the Renovation, Repair and Painting rule were performed. Cleaning verification cardsare available by calling the National Lead Information Center at 1-800- 424-LEAD (5323).
