Generally, a sniper's primary function in modern warfare is to provide detailed surveillance from a concealed position and, if necessary, to reduce the enemy's combat ability by neutralizing high-value targets (especially officers and other key personnel) and in the process pinning down and demoralizing the enemy.

Every branch of the military uses snipers in some capacity. The SEALs, CCT, and Army Rangers all have sniper elements in their units. And although they all have their respective sniper schools, there is one school that stands out -- the United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper School.

Phoenix Raven. Air Mobility Command's Phoenix Raven program, implemented in 1997, consists of teams of specially trained Security Forces personnel dedicated to providing force protection for Mobility Air Force aircraft transiting through austere locations with potentially high terrorist and criminal threat levels.

An Air Force sniper team consists of a shooter and a spotter. The shooter, for example, can use an M-24 weapon system, and the spotter is often equipped with a high-grade spotting scope. As a team, they get rounds on target.

The 811th Security Forces Squadron operates the largest executive security mission in the Air Force, they ensure around-the-clock protection of the Air Force One complex and provide executive protection for the President and other senior leaders as they transit the installation.

Applicants must also have a clean criminal history, be able to speak distinctly, be eligible to receive a Secret security clearance and earn a general score of 33 or higher on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery entrance exam.
