Henry Hudson was an English navigator and explorer who set out to find either a northeast passage “by the North Pole to Japan and China” or a similar northwest passage. Though neither passage was found, his attempts contributed significantly to the navigational geography of North America.

Henry Hudson wanted to find a northern passage to India. He thought that the ice covering the North Pole might melt during the summer. Perhaps he could sail right over the top of the world to India. Starting in 1607, Henry headed up four different expeditions searching for the elusive northern passage.

Henry Hudson captained three distinct sea voyages in the early 1600s while trying to find an overseas trade route from Europe to Asia. At that time in history, the overland route through Europe and Asia and the existing maritime route around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa were both long and dangerous.

Although he never achieved in finding a passage to Asia, Hudson discovered various North American water routes. His discoveries led other Europeans to journey to North America where colonization and trading would take place. Many of the areas that he explored and sailed through are named after him today.

Hudson's third and final ship, the Discovery was the ship of another famous explorer, George Weymouth. Weymouth explored, what is today, the Hudson Strait, the body of water leading into Hudson Bay. The Discovery was larger than both the Hopewell and the Half Moon. aboard.

Henry Hudson failed to find the passage to the Orient, he discovered New York City, the Hudson River, the Hudson Strait, and the Hudson Bay.

After spending a winter trapped by ice in present-day Hudson Bay, the starving crew of the Discovery mutinies against its captain, English navigator Henry Hudson, and sets him, his teenage son, and seven supporters adrift in a small, open boat.

The ship's construction fulfilled Dr. Hendricks' dream to use the historic icon as an educational instrument, bridging the gap between the American way of life and the Dutch heritage in New York state. In March 2015, the replica ship departed the Hudson River Valley to a new home, Hoorn, The Netherlands.

Hudson, his son John, and seven other crewmembers (including King) were forced into the ship's boat and cast adrift. They were never seen again. Five mutineers died on the return voyage.

How did Henry Hudson die? During a voyage into Hudson Bay, begun in 1610, quarrels arose among the crew. A mutiny ensued, and Henry Hudson, his son, and seven others were set adrift in a small boat in June 1611. The castaways were never heard of again, and nothing definitive is known about what happened to them.
