Cooper serves as southern New Jersey's major tertiary-care referral hospital for specialized services and is home to the Bone & Joint Institute, Heart Institute, Neurological Institute and Urological Institute.

Cooper Primary care includes a team of dedicated family medicine physicians, internal medicine physicians, and advance practice providers in 20 different locations serving communities in south and central New Jersey.

Early Beginnings Although the four-story stone building was completed in 1877, the original 30-bed hospital stood empty for 10 years until enough money was available to open for patients in August 1887. Cooper Hospital's original medical staff consisted of eight doctors: four general physicians and four surgeons.
