CACFP uses federal dollars to provide nutritious meals and snacks to low-income children in child-care centers and family child-care homes. Research has demonstrated CACFP's positive impact.

Original source documents that support menu and meal counts must be retained for the current Federal Fiscal Year (FFY), plus the prior three years. In cases where there are open audits, the records must be kept until the audit is completed.

The breakfast meal must include three components (fruits/vegetables, grains, and fluid milk), lunch and supper meals must include all five components, and snacks must include two of the five components.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requires Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) sponsors to maintain accurate documentation that supports compliance with CACFP requirements. All records to support a claim must be kept on file for three years plus the current year per 7 CFR 226.10.

In all such cases, the records must be retained until: (1) the completion of the action and resolution of all issues arising from it; or (2) the expiration of the regular 3-year period, whichever occurs later. Adequate procurement methods are a prerequisite for receiving funds.

The creditable serving of canned fruit in 100 percent juice may include the juice, but cannot include water or syrup. Fruits credit based on volume (cups), except dried fruits credit as twice the volume served, e.g., ¼ cup of raisins credits as ½ cup of the fruits component. The minimum creditable amount is ⅛ cup.
