Some bladder tanks have “full acceptance volume.” This means that if there is a loss of air in the tank, the bladder would be able to accept the full tank volume without permanent damage.

The typical location for the expansion tank is on the suction line of the chilled water pump, near or on the fill line. Another possible location that is used less often is at the highest point in the system.

Once you completely open the valve, you can measure and note the pressure. You can also check your expansion tank's pre-charge pressure by knocking on the side of the tank with your knuckles to determine if it's full of air or water. Pre-charge pressure that's too low may be indicated when the tank is full of water.

When the temperature outside drops below a certain threshold, the water inside your pipes will start to freeze. If this happens, the ice will expand and could cause damage to your plumbing or even rupture the pipe. An expansion tank can help prevent this by taking up some of that excess space.

Acceptance Factor: The percentage of of tank volume storing fluid, expressed as a decimal. Drawdown Volume: The amount of water that is drawn out from a starting tank pressure down to the minimum pressure.

To select a thermal expansion tank, the total tank capacity and the acceptance volume must be determined. The total tank capacity is the volume of the tank. The acceptance volume is the amount of water that the tank will accept with air pressure on the air-side of the diaphragm.

It is simply a closed tank with a connection to the chilled water system. The closed tank has extra space that is filled with air, when the temperature in the system is cold. As the temperature within the chilled water system rises, the volume expands and fills the empty space within the tank.

Expansion tanks are required by code in all new water heater installations in closed systems. A closed water system uses check valves, backflow prevention devices, pressure-reducing valves, or other devices on the supply line to prevent water from being sucked back into the municipal water supply.

Remove valve cap and unscrew the valve core to release the air charge and then carefully lay the tank on its side to drain water out. Next, remove the elbow connector at the base of the tank and remove jam nut. Push the bottom system connection into the tank. Remove the top cover from the tank and pull the bladder out.

One more thing to keep in mind when sizing your tank: as a rule of thumb, it should typically be 1/3 full when cold and about 1/2 full when hot. We hope this information is helpful but if you have any questions or comments, please let us know.
