How to fill out the Chapter 3 Active Reading Guide Carbon and the Molecular Diversity of Life online

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for filling out the Chapter 3 Active Reading Guide on carbon and the molecular diversity of life. Each section of the guide is designed to enhance your understanding of the concepts related to carbon and its role in biological diversity.

Follow the steps to successfully complete the Active Reading Guide.

  1. Click ‘Get Form’ button to obtain the form and open it in your editing interface.
  2. Begin with Section 1: For question 1, create an electron distribution diagram for carbon. Answer how many valence electrons carbon possesses, how many bonds it can form, and specify the types of bonds it can create with other elements.
  3. Continue to list the types of carbon skeletons that can be formed as prompted in section 1.
  4. For question 3, define what a hydrocarbon is and name two examples, indicating whether they are hydrophobic or hydrophilic.
  5. Define functional groups and then complete the chart on chemical groups in biological processes using Figure 3.5 from your text.
  6. Master the chart and respond to prompts in question 6 using your knowledge of functional groups.
  7. In Section 2, identify the four main classes of large molecules in living organisms and circle the three that are macromolecules, providing a definition for macromolecule.
  8. Define what a polymer is and what a monomer is, along with the reactions that connect monomers.
  9. Summarize the key points about carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids in their respective sections.
  10. After completing all sections, review your responses for accuracy, and once satisfied, save your changes. You can then choose to download, print, or share the completed guide.

Complete the Chapter 3 Active Reading Guide online to enhance your understanding of carbon and its molecular diversity.

Carbon accounts for the diversity of biological molecules, which has made possible the wide variety of living things. Proteins, DNA, carbohydrates, and other molecules that distinguish living matter from inorganic material are all composed of carbon atoms bonded to each other and to atoms of other elements.

Hydrocarbons are hydrophobic molecules consisting of only carbon and hydrogen, such as benzene and methane.

Methyl R-CH The methyl group is the only non-polar functional group in our class list above. The methyl group consists of a carbon atom bound to 3 hydrogen atoms.

Life on earth would not be possible without carbon. This is in part due to carbon's ability to readily form bonds with other atoms, giving flexibility to the form and function that biomolecules can take, such as DNA and RNA, which are essential for the defining characteristics of life: growth and replication.

Functional groups can be classified as hydrophobic or hydrophilic based on their charge and polarity characteristics. The only hydrophobic group below is the methyl (CH 3start subscript, 3, end subscript) group, which is nonpolar.

The carbon atom has unique properties that allow it to form covalent bonds to as many as four different atoms, making this versatile element ideal to serve as the basic structural component, or “backbone,” of the macromolecules.

Fatty acids are long-chain hydrocarbons with a carboxylic acid functional group. Their relatively long nonpolar hydrocarbon chains make them hydrophobic.

Carboxyl group is polar due to resonance. Hydroxyl group is an electron donor (via the unshared pair on oxygen) and carbonyl group is an electron acceptor (due to carbocation character of the carbonyl carbon atom).
