Neurons send and receive electrical signals to communicate with each other in the nervous system and with other types of cells in the body, particularly muscles. At one end, neurons have branch-like projections called dendrites that allow them to receive signals.

A synapse releases chemical signals, which are called neurotransmitters. These signals travel to another neuron to create a new electrical wave in that cell. The structure of a nerve cell, and the site of cell-to-cell communication (the “synapse”).

How far the action potentials can travel before they need to be regenerated depends on the diameter of the axon (thicker is better) and whether the axon is insulated with myelin. Resulting conduction speeds range from about 0.5–100 meters per second – fast, but not as fast as copper wire.

The parts of neurons that send messages are the axons, and the parts of neurons that receive messages are the dendrites.

The process by which a single neuron relays messages to other neurons is called: synaptic transmission. In the process of communication between neurons, neurotransmitter molecules are released into the gap between neurons by the: synaptic vesicles.

When neurons communicate, an electrical impulse triggers the release of neurotransmitters from the axon into the synapse. The neurotransmitters cross the synapse and bind to special molecules on the other side, called receptors. Receptors are located on the dendrites. Receptors receive and process the message.

Messages travel from one neuron to another through sending neurotransmitters across the synapse connecting the two neurons. These neurotransmitters travel from the axon terminals of one neuron to the dendrites of the other neuron.
