While Smiley is gone, the stranger fills Webster with quail-shot so that he can't jump. This enables the stranger to win the competition and take off with Smiley's 40 dollars.

A local man bets a stranger that his frog will win a jumping contest. At an opportune moment, the stranger pours small bullets into the mouth of the man's frog. The bullets make the frog so heavy that it cannot jump, and the stranger's frog wins the contest.

While Smiley is out catching a frog for him, the stranger pries open Dan'l Webster's mouth and fills the frog with quail shot, which weighs him down and makes him lose the race and Smiley the money.

Explain. How did the stranger outwit smiley? Shove led (buck shot) down the frogs throat so it couldn't jump. What does the lack of an ending to the story suggest about smiley?

Through a frame narrative, the narrator (clearly an educated man from the East) presents the story of Jim Smiley, told in Simon Wheeler's uneducated dialect. This is the main device that Twain uses to present the contrast between East and West: educated vs. uneducated, refined vs. coarse.

How did the stranger get Smiley to leave him alone with the frog? He said he had no frog. As soon as he got the money, the stranger ran off without a word. After he discovered that the frog had been weighted, Smiley forced the stranger to give back the money.

Jim Smiley had brought Dan'l Webster downtown in a box in order to find someone to place a bet with. The stranger spotted the box and asked Smiley what it was; Smiley replied it was a frog, and the stranger asked what it was good for. Smiley boasted that his frog could “outjump any frog in Calaveras County.”

The narrator of the story is asked by a friend to call on old Simon Wheeler and ask about his friend's friend, Leonidas W. Smiley. The narrator now suspects that his friend never knew anybody named Leonidas W. Smiley, and that this was the pretext to get Wheeler to tell him about another guy named Jim Smiley.
