In 1939 Hunt's efforts to further strengthen the School reached fruition when it merged with the State Teachers and Agricultural College to become Fort Valley State College (FVSC). William M. Hubbard had founded the Agricultural College in Forsyth in 1902.

FVSU's bachelor's degree program in veterinary technology is the only accredited four-year program of its kind in Georgia.

Fort Valley State University was founded in 1895 as Fort Valley High and Industrial School. The university is one of Georgia's two land-grant institutions and one of the state's ten historically black colleges and universities.

John Wesley Davison, founder and principal of Fort Valley High and Industrial School, devised a plan that would provide a quality education to African-American students in the south.

At the graduate level, the school was granted authorization to offer specialist-level degrees in addition to master's degrees. On June 12, 1996, the institution obtained university status and became Fort Valley State University.
