The I-20 form lists the start date of your program, and you may enter the US 30 days before your academic program begins. Your F-1 or M-1 student visas can be issued up to 120 days in advance of the start date of your program.

The first step is to apply to a SEVP-approved school in the United States. After the SEVP-approved school accepts your enrollment, you will be registered for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee. The SEVP-approved school will issue you a Form I-20.

Once accepted into a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school, international students will receive a Form I-20 from their designated school official (DSO). You must also obtain a Form I-20 for any eligible dependents you plan to bring to the United States with you.

The I-20 is a multi-purpose document issued by a U.S. government-approved educational institution certifying that a student has been admitted to a full-time study program and has demonstrated sufficient financial resources to stay in the United States.

After receipt of all required documents, it takes about 2–3 weeks for your I-20 to be processed. We are currently issuing all I-20s electronically through the Terra Dotta portal. You will be notified by email when your I-20 is available to download, print, and sign.

The $350 fee can be paid through the mail. Submit a completed Form I-901 and a check or money order drawn on a U.S. bank and payable in U.S. currency. The fee can also be paid through a sponsor.
