The New Town Planning Area was declared in 1999, constituting the erstwhile Bhangore Rajarhat Development Authority, comprising 45 Mouzas under the North and South 24 Parganas.

The process of investing in residential and industrial facilities and infrastructural development of the area was mainly started under the leadership of the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Jyoti Basu in the late 1990s.
