Norman Bates suffers from a mental disorder known as dissociative identity disorder (DID) or multiple personality disorder (MPD). After enduring emotional and physical abuse from Norma from an early age, Norman would go onto develop a second personality/identity that resembles his Mother in many ways.

Near the end of Psycho, a psychiatrist explains what happened to Norman: that he had murdered his mother and her lover years earlier, after feeling abandoned by her. That, over the years, his personality had become shared with hers.

Due to his abuse Norma has suffered, Norman is determined to protect her from anyone, and is weary anytime a man shows an attraction to her. Though he at first appears to be a good individual, Norman is mentally disturbed and a troubled young man, and becomes more a villainous character as the series progresses.

Bates is FINALLY released from prison, a tearjerking scene between Anna and Bates ensues. Bates is greeted warmly by everyone downstairs except Thomas of course. Upstairs, Lord Grantham offers Bates a cottage and tells him to relax until he sorts out the Thomas situation.

A contemporary prequel to Psycho, giving a portrayal of how Norman Bates' psyche unravels through his teenage years, and how deeply intricate his relationship with his mother, Norma, truly is.

Norman Bates is a fictional character created by American author Robert Bloch as the main antagonist in his 1959 thriller novel Psycho. He has an alter, Mother, who takes from the form of his abusive mother, and later victim, Norma, who in his daily life runs the Bates Motel.

In 1920, after Audrey Bartlett gives a testimony that clears his name, Bates is released from prison, and he returns with Anna to a cottage near Downton. They start painting it and it is done by the time O'Brien pays a visit.
