The PAVE checklist is a great way to evaluate your personal minimums and hazards you could experience when flying. Each letter stands for a different risk when flying; Personal/Pilot, Aircraft, EnVironment, and External Pressures. These are the factors a pilot must take into account when making their decision to fly.

We'll start on familiar ground, with the mnemonic AROW. The letters stand for the documents that must be carried aboard an airplane. They are an airworthiness certificate, registration certificate, operating limitations, and weight and balance information.

The 1500-hour rule is a law by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that requires all pilots in America/Canada to have at least 1500 hours of experience/flight time before being eligible to fly for a regional airline or major airline (such as FedEx, American Airlines, Delta etc.)

To legally act as PIC, a private, commercial, and airline transport pilot must have a current medical certificate and have all required endorsements, ratings, and recency of experience for the type of aircraft being flown and the flight conditions under which the flight is conducted (FAR 61.3, 61.31, 61.56, 61.57).

One such approach involves regular evaluation of: Plan, Plane, Pilot, Passengers, and Programming. The point of the 5P approach is not to memorize yet another aviation mnemonic. You might simply write these words on your kneeboard, or add a reference to 5Ps to your checklist for key decision points during the flight.

To help pilots better apply the principles of ADM, the FAA adopted the 3-P Model (Perceive — Process — Perform). This three-step process offers a simple, systematic approach to accomplishing each ADM task during all phases of flight.

IMSAFE stands for Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue and Emotion (or Eating). PAVE refers to Pilot, Aircraft, EnVironment and External pressures. Pilots often mention them together in incident reports submitted to the Aviation Safety Reporting System.

Pilots are familiar with acronyms, and the PAVE checklist is an important personal minimums checklist for pilots to use during the preflight planning stage of a flight. The letters of the PAVE acronym stand for different risks associated with flying: personal, aircraft, environment and external pressures.
