Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3 is the type species of the genus Ampelovirus, family Closteroviridae, and a member of the proposed subgroup I of this genus (Martelli et al., 2011, 2012). GLRaV-3 particles are flexuous filaments, 1,800 × 12 nm in size, showing distinct cross banding (Figure 3).

Symptomless infections can occur and these infected grapevines may act as a reservoir of virus for other sensitive varieties. Leafroll symptoms include downward rolling of leaves and reddening (red varieties; Figure 1, 3-6) or yellowing (white varieties, Figure 2) of the leaf tissue between the main veins.

The most obvious GLD symptoms appear in the fall, when red cultivars display leaf reddening with green venation (Figure 1). While symptoms are not as apparent in white cultivars, there is a slight leaf chlorosis. Both red and white cultivars develop downward rolling of leaf margins and phloem disruption.

11 tips to beat grape fungal diseases Apply dormant sprays to reduce inoculum levels. ... Cut it out. ... Open up that canopy. ... Don't let down your defenses. ... Scout early, scout often. ... Use protectant and systemic fungicides. ... Consider fungicide resistance. ... Watch the weather.

Currently, there is no chemical control for grape leafroll disease. Chemical control of potential insect vectors of the viruses that cause leafroll disease may help limit spread of the disease within a vineyard.
