Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) was created in 1994 as a “One-Window Facilitator” on behalf of the Government of Pakistan (GoP) to promote private investments in power sector. In 2012 PPIB was made a statutory organization through Private Power and Infrastructure Board Act 2012 (Act VI of 2012).

In Pakistan, 41 thermal independent power producers (IPPs) with a total installed capacity of 17 642 MW and 8 hydro IPPs with a total installed capacity of 472 MW are operational.

Pakistan has tremendous potential to generate solar and wind power. ing to the World Bank, utilizing just 0.071 percent of the country's area for solar photovoltaic (solar PV) power generation would meet Pakistan's current electricity demand. Wind is also an abundant resource.

With the average annual solar Irradiation in the range of 5-7 kWh/m2 and Irradiance average between 800-1200 Watt/m2, taking into consideration all the technical constraints, Pakistan has a solar potential of 2.9 Million MW [6] [7].

Some examples are: Jhimpir Wind Power Plant (operational) Gharo Wind Power Plant (operational) Bin Qasim Wind Power Project (under construction)
