Standard: The measured duct leakage must not exceed 0.04 CFM25 x floor area (in square feet) served by the system.

A duct leakage tester is a diagnostic tool designed to measure the airtightness of forced air heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) ductwork. A duct leakage tester consists of a calibrated fan for measuring an air flow rate and a pressure sensing device to measure the pressure created by the fan flow.

Testing Procedure Application: By pressurizing the interior of the home with a blower door while using a duct testing device, duct leakage to the interior is eliminated from the measurement. The test is designed to measure the CFM25 value for leakage in the duct system to outside of the conditioned space.

There are two main types of air duct leakage tests, LTO and TDL. LTO stands for “leakage to outside.” This type of test measures only the amount of leakage you have going into unconditioned spaces like un-insulated attics and similar areas.

The duct leakage testing also known as pressure testing, is a procedure which helps to locate improperly sealed areas of the ductwork which can have a significant effect on HVAC system performance, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the form of CO2.

Verification can take place via either a post-construction test or a rough-in test. For the post-construction test, leakage measurement must be made across the entire system, including the manufacturer's air handler enclosure, with all register boots taped or sealed at a test pressure of 0.1 inches w.g. (25 Pa).

Duct testing is the process of using calibrated mechanical equipment to measure the amount of airflow that is lost through the duct system when it is at normal operating pressure. While some joints or seams may have only small leaks, other sections may be completely disconnected.

Building codes such as the International Residential Code (IRC 2015) and the International Energy Conservation Code (2015 IECC), and energy-efficiency programs like ENERGY STAR Single-Family New Homes require that if a home's HVAC system includes a duct distribution system, the ducts must be tested for air leakage.
