Oxygenated treatment (OT) is a technique used to reduce corrosion in a boiler and its associated feedwater system in flow-through boilers. With oxygenated treatment, oxygen is injected into the feedwater to keep the oxygen level between 30 and 50 ppb.

The primary reason for OT is to reduce the transport of iron oxide deposits to the boiler tubes. The benefits of operating a once-through SC boiler with OT include: Lowering overall corrosion rates by forming a protective, double-oxide layer with a controlled amount of oxygen present in the condensate.

One of the properties of hydrazine is that it is an oxygen scavenger, and because of this, hydrazine is dosed into the boiler system to remove the remaining trace levels of dissolved oxygen. It is for this reason that the measurement of dissolved oxygen and hydrazine is imperative on power station plant.

1 All-volatile treatment (AVT) AVT is defined as the exclusive use of volatile conditioning agents. Volatile chemicals evaporate from the water into the steam in a gaseous form. When steam condenses, the chemicals dissolve into the water.

The purpose of ammonia dosing is to control the pH of water; pH is kept slightly alkaline to avoid corrosions from chloride and other salts, whereas DO is scavenged by dosing hydrazine. A very low ppb of DO can cause severe corrosion by pitting. Therefore a slight residual of hydrazine is kept in the system.
