You may report any environmental emergency that poses an immediate threat to the public health or the well-being of the environment such as oil and chemical spills or accidents causing releases of pollutants by calling (866) MDE-GOTO.

The reportable quantity or “RQ” for a hazardous substance is the amount of the material that, if released, requires immediate reporting to the National Response Center (NRC).

Any release that exceeds 25 gallons must be reported within 24 hours of discovery. A release less than 25 gallons that is not contained and cleaned up within 24 hours must be reported immediately. Any suspected leak must be reported within 24 hours of discovery.

Reportable chemical spill quantities are those listed for hazardous substances under Superfund, or as extremely hazardous substances under the Superfund Reauthorization and Amendments Act of 1986 (SARA), the emergency planning statute which also establishes threshold planning quantities (29 Ill. Admin. Code § 430.30).

The reportable quantities apply to the waste itself, not merely to the toxic contaminant. Unlisted hazardous wastes which exhibit toxicity are also covered under this regulation, and have been assigned a reportable quantity of 100 pounds.

Develop a spill response plan that includes: Names and telephone numbers of individuals to be contacted in the event of a spill. Evacuation plans for the room or building, as appropriate. Instructions for containing the spilled material, including potential releases to the environment (e.g., protect floor drains).

Your spill is reportable to the DNR if: there is an impact to human health; Note: An evacuation is considered a threat to human health. there is an impact to the environment; Note: Water of the state includes a threat or spill into a sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and/or surface water.

(a) Reportable quantities means quantities that may be harmful as set forth in § 117.3, the discharge of which is a violation of section 311(b)(3) and requires notice as set forth in § 117.21. (b) Administrator means the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”).
