The reason we most often ask someone to return for additional views is because of a summation shadow. This occurs when several insignificant areas of dense tissue appear together in one location on a mammogram, creating a shadow that appears to be a major/significant density.

Breast development is commonly asymmetric and one or both breasts may be small. This condition may be a congenital defect associated with underlying abnormalities of the pectoral muscle (as in Poland's syndrome), related to trauma (typically surgery or radiotherapy) or it may be a more subjective aesthetic description.

There must be enough breast tissue to get an accurate image from a mammogram. Some women with small breasts worry they lack sufficient tissue, but the truth is that everyone has enough breast tissue for a mammogram. An experienced technologist should be able to image breasts of any size.

Dense breasts tend to be more common in younger women and in women with smaller breasts, but anyone regardless of age or breast size can have dense breasts.

This study suggests that there are genetic variations that are linked to both breast size and breast cancer. It does not show, however, that larger breast size increases a woman's risk of developing breast cancer.

Shadows these can due to increased density of breast tissue or harmless (benign) cysts. Calcium deposits (calcification) although large numbers of tiny calcium deposits may be associated with cancer, calcification can also be caused by ageing, injury or a benign lump such as a fibroadenoma.

What does cancer look like on a mammogram? Cancers may be seen as masses (like a ball, but usually with an irregular shape), areas of asymmetry that resemble normal tissue, calcifications (white specks), and/or areas of architectural distortion (imagine the puckering caused by pulling a thread in a piece of fabric).

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. While screening mammograms are routinely administered to detect breast cancer in women who have no apparent symptoms, diagnostic mammograms are used after suspicious results on a screening mammogram or after some signs of breast cancer alert the physician to check the tissue.
