Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen (FS-240) State Department Certification of Birth (FS-545 or DS-1350)

Certification of Report of Birth (DS-1350) The Department of State issues a DS-1350 to U.S. citizens in the U.S. who were born outside the U.S. and acquired U.S. citizenship at birth, based on the information shown on the FS-240.

A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA, or Form FS-240) is a document that certifies a child acquired U.S. citizenship at birth. You should report the birth of a child born abroad at a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas. The U.S. embassy or consulate will issue you a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA).

If they registered your birth with a U.S. embassy or consulate, they would receive a document called FS-240 and entitled Report of a Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen. If they registered your birth with the State Department, they would receive a document called DS-1350 and entitled Certification of Report of Birth.

Once your application and interview are complete, the processing time for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad and first passport is approximately 15 working days. Note: There is no expedited service for a CRBA, but in case of emergency or urgent travel, we may be able to issue an emergency passport.

A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA, or Form FS-240) is a document that certifies a child acquired U.S. citizenship at birth. You should report the birth of a child born abroad at a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas.

(1) A Certification of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States (form FS-545): (a) Form FS-545 was first issued in 1960; (b) It was issued by the U.S. embassy or consulate; and. (c) Form FS-545 issuance was discontinued in November 1990, but is still valid as evidence of U.S. citizenship.

Form FS 240 is an essential vital record that serves as proof of the child's US citizenship. A child born abroad to U.S. citizens will need Form FS 240 to: Apply for American IDs. Get a Social Security number.
