Hexavalent chromium may be found on chromated parts but not on clean chrome-plated parts.

But hexavalent chromium—a highly hazardous substance emitted by chrome-plating businesses—is 500 times more carcinogenic than diesel exhaust, putting it in the cross hair of regulators for decades. The California Air Resources Board today approved a landmark ban on use of the substance by the chrome plating industry.

More significantly, CARB's ban also prohibits hexavalent chromium's use for industrial durability plating commonly used in aerospace, by 2039. ing to CARB, the ban is necessary because harmful emissions from the plating process disproportionately endanger the health of people living in disadvantaged communities.

Rule 2202 – On-Road Motor Vehicle Mitigation Options requires any employer who employs 250 or more employees at a work site to develop and implement an emission reduction program to reduce emissions related to employee commutes (between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM).

(a) Purpose The purpose of this rule is to reduce hexavalent chromium emissions from facilities that perform chromium electroplating or chromic acid anodizing operations and other activities that are generally associated with chromium electroplating and chromic acid anodizing operations.

South Coast AQMD Rule 1469 requires personnel from all chrome plating and chromic acid anodizing facilities to complete mandatory training and certification every two years.

(a) Purpose This rule sets forth pre-construction review requirements for new facilities subject to the requirements of the RECLAIM program, for modifications to RECLAIM facilities, and for facilities which increase their allocation to a level greater than their starting Allocation plus non-tradable credits.

(1) The Executive Officer may notify the owner or operator of a lead processing or metal melting facility that ambient air monitoring may be required if the Executive Officer has reason to believe that: (A) The ambient air concentration of lead from the lead processing facility contributes to ambient air concentrations ...
