Even if you call 911 from your home, the paramedics and firefighters that respond to your call will have to give you CPR unless you have a DNR. What is a Do Not Resuscitate order (DNR)? A DNR is a legal document (signed paper) that tells staff not to revive you if you stop breathing and/or your heart stops beating.

A do-not-resuscitate order, or DNR order, is a medical order written by a doctor. It instructs health care providers not to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if a patient's breathing stops or if the patient's heart stops beating.

Doctors and hospitals will usually accept and follow a patient's DNR order on the basis that it promotes patient autonomy. AMDs have been recognized by MMC (see Q&A 2 above). However, neither the Mental Health Act 2001 nor the Medical Act 1971 provide any legal framework regulating AMDs in Malaysia.

Under state law, a do-no-resuscitate order is valid outside of a health care facility. A specific bracelet may be worn to signal that an order has been signed. When the order is present or the bracelet is worn, and emergency responder cannot start resuscitation.
