The steps involved in query processing and optimization are as follows − A sequence of primitive operations that can be used to evaluate a query is called query execution plan or query evaluation plan. The query execution engine takes a query evaluation plan, executes that plan and produces the desired output.

Query processing denotes the compilation and execution of a query specification usually expressed in a declarative database query language such as the structured query language (SQL). Query processing consists of a compile-time phase and a runtime phase.

➢ Four main Phases: decomposition, optimization, code generation and execution. Activity of choosing an efficient execution strategy for processing query. ➢ As there are many equivalent transformations of same high-level query, aim of QO is to choose one that minimizes resource usage.

Query optimization is the overall process of choosing the most efficient means of executing a SQL statement. SQL is a nonprocedural language, so the optimizer is free to merge, reorganize, and process in any order. The database optimizes each SQL statement based on statistics collected about the accessed data.

Query optimization involves three steps, namely query tree generation, plan generation, and query plan code generation. Step 1 − Query Tree Generation. Step 2 − Query Plan Generation. Step 3− Code Generation.

Query processing is the process of translating a high-level query, such as SQL, into a low-level query that can be executed by the database system. This involves parsing, validating, and optimizing the query, as well as generating a query execution plan.
